  • EconLit (Economics) -- includes economists' views and studies of many social issues, including health care, poverty, and homelessness
  • PAIS - formerly Public Affairs Information Service – the premier public affairs index, originally based upon the collections of the New York Public Library.  PAIS Archive goes back to 1915.
  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts – 1975-present


  • Education Index – includes educational administration
  • ERIC – links to periodical articles purchased by Rutgers; includes educational administration
  • ERIC (Free online version) – Source for many full-text ED reports
  • ProQuest Education Journals – Another selection of journals in education, many in full text



  • CINAHL (Nursing)
  • HealthSTAR (Health Services, Technology, Administration, and Research) – For healthcare administrators
  • PubMed (Medicine) – Indexing free to the public
  • PsycINFO – Psychological Abstracts
  • Social Sciences Full Text (Interdisciplinary) -- particularly useful for the social implications of medical practice and managed care
  • Sociological Abstracts – 1963-present; good for social aspects of healthcare
  • POPLINE – POPLINE provides access to 370,000 carefully selected publications and resources related to family planning and reproductive health

Social Sciences and Social Problems

  • Scopus by Elsevier – Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. 
  • CIAO (International Affairs) – Columbia International Affairs Online -- a collection of reports, conferences, journals and other publications from think tanks and international associations plus selected books on international affairs
  • CQ Researcher – weekly reports on "hot topics" from Congressional Quarterly, Inc.  This is not scholarly publishing, but informative nevertheless.
  • PolicyMap – Online data and mapping application; includes data on real estate.  Basic search for free; subscription available.
  • ProQuest Social Sciences Premium Collection -- Super, interdisciplinary search of numerous databases such as PAIS, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, ProQuest Criminal Justice, and many more.  You can place exact phrases in quotation marks, such as "public management" or "civic engagement".
  • PsycINFO - Psychological Abstracts online
  • Social Explorer - Interactive data mapping; includes data on religion.  Free and paid editions.
  • Social Sciences Full Text (Interdisciplinary)
  • Sociological Abstracts – 1963-present


  • Business Source Premier (Business and Management) -- Many articles on topics like mass transit and highway planning in addition to transportation as a business
  • ProQuest Social Sciences Premium Collection -- Good coverage of public transportation
  • Tranweb:  Transportation Article File -- Produced by the transportation librarians at Northwestern; free.
  • TRID:  the TRIS and ITRD Database -- Free. "Covers all modes and disciplines of transportation" -- from the website.  Transportation Research Thesaurus standardizes terms for TRID searching.
  • Compendex (Engineering Village) -- Engineering Village allows the searching of three resources for engineers:  Compendex, Inspec, and the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) database.  Good information about the technical aspects of highways, bridges, mass transit, maritime transportation, and the like.
